3. "RE: Tongue Blocking and adding articulation"

LAST EDITED ON Aug-16-06 AT 11:10 AM (PST) Tongue blocking is a great technique with distinct advantages for particular sounds (especially in the Chicago Blues realm), but the Vertical Slot method (whistle, pucker, lipping) is better for learning to bend notes for the vast majority of players, and for repeating notes (i.e. articulation or "tonguing") as you want to do.It's difficult to to get great articulation with tongue blocking because your tongue must remain on the harmonica, but not impossible. While tongue blocking, say "tah, tah, tah", with your mouth and tongue, but don't let your tongue fully come off the harmonica. So, it sort of works, but not as distinctly as when playing single notes with the Vertical Slot method. Some tongue blockers use a technique called "Delayed Tongue" (tongue slapping) to repeat notes. Here's a link with sound file for it- http://www.harmonicalessons.com/members/advtechtb2.php Let us know how it goes. Play on, Dave Gage |
