"Kay or Piedmont Blues Harmonicas?"

I was looking through Musicians Friend the other day and I saw 2 different harmonica packs. They were both the 7 natural keys in a case for $19.99. One was made by Kay and the other was made by Piedmont Blues. I was wondering if anyone has played these harmonica or if anyone knows anything about them. I realize that you get what you pay for, so im not sure about the quality of the harmonicas. I have been playing the harmonica for a year or two and I have a few other good harps like a Special 20 and a few Marine Bands, but I was thinking about getting these harps just to mess around on. Is it worth it? Thanks a lot

Tim

I've probably answered this question a hundred times, but you've already answered it yourself, "...you get what you pay for." Cheap harmonicas leak air and are rarely in very good tune. They are indeed glorified toys.

There is one good argument for getting the set for $19.99, you can always give them away to friends interested in harmonica and you aren't out much dough if you do so. If they get hooked, recommend they pick up a Lee Oskar in "C" and join the site. Hohner Special 20's play great, but just don't last. Marine Bands flat out leak too much air to be consistent for anyone seriously learning and trying to improve (especially if you are learning to bend).

Also, one Forum post is enough. All the folks that regularly answer the posts (like myself) check all Forums so your posts won't missed regardless of which Forum it ends up in.

Play on,
Dave

Tim,

I got a set of the Kay harps a while ago. They were great for messing around with, and helped me key a lot of songs. But once I started getting better, I could hardly stand to play them. They were a great help in figuring out which harp keys I really needed (or wanted). And as I upgraded, I passed them along to family and friends interested in playing.

Fair Winds,
Kim

A while back I bought the Kay, Chicago Blues 12 harp set and I HATED it. There is a metal piece that sticks out of the comb that can hurt the lip and the harp leaks air... horrible. Today I bought a Piedmont set of 7 and I can tell you... it is a far better harp. Less air leaks out ant they and very comforitable, FAR more comforiatble to play.

Sure you get what you pay for, and the Piedmonts will probably break quick... but you don't need to hurt yourself or waste your money. Piedmont all the way.
