"Comparing harps"

I've been playing Hohner Pro Harps for the last six months but have just bought a Blues Harp and it's a revelation. The tuning is better, the tone is far sweeter than the Pro and it is much easier to hit those awkward bends. It looks great too.

Dave, what am I missing, why is the Blues Harp not on your recommended list but the Pro Harp is?

Regards
Dave

That's odd. They're tuned the same. In fact, they use the same reed plates. The only real difference to the sound is due to the different body material. The Pro Harp has a plastic body, which makes it more air tight but slightly "brighter" in tone than the wooden bodied Blues Harp. But I find their tone very similar in spite of this. I have several Blues Harps and a couple of Pro Harps, and I love both models. The Blues Harp was my favourite model until I tried the Pro Harp. Now that's my favourite.

As for why Dave recomends the Pro Harp and not the other one, it's probably because he doesn't recomend wooden bodied harps. Am I close, Dave?

Dave,

Shaggy pretty much nailed it. Those two harmonicas are the same except for the comb. And yes, I've found that for the average player, wood combs, unless customized, tend to leak air and are thus harder to play. The "MS" Blues Harp are much better than they used to be, but the ones I've tried over the years still tend to leak more air than the plastic comb models.

Try a few different brands and models and play what you like. There is no right or wrong if the harmonica plays good and sounds good to you. You can always change later if you find something you like better.
