1. "Red Wing - Comments/Questions"
In response to message #0

While determining the notes to play on the harmonica from the sheet music for piano, I discovered a few things and wondered about a few others. (Please note that the music notes were above the correct words in the body of my message, the forum format doesn't seem to be recognizing the tabs and spaces for some reason though... At any rate, the first lines are the chords, the second lines are the notes, and the third lines are the directions for the Eb harp.)

Since I am still a relatively new player, I only own six harp keys so far, Eb is not one of them but Bb is. This song sounded alright in Bb but it required locating the same notes all over again in different places and then found there were some notes that I couldn't achieve. After spending some time trying to figure out a way to overcome that problem in different keys, I did something else just for grins and that sounded okay too. What is the terminology for playing a song in the pattern of another key vs playing the same notes in another key? I know it wasn't really right for me to play the song with my Bb harp in the pattern I laid out for the Eb harp, but it wasn't too bad. To take it a step further, what sorts of things do you more experienced folks do with the bass lines when playing sheet music? (I only outlined the chords and the melody of this song but would like to do more.) Any tips on shifting, translating and transposing are welcome.

Thanks! CR

2. "Music Theory Questions"
In response to message #1

I see that my questions didnít get any answers over the weekendÖ Iíll rephrase them because I really want to understand the big picture. When I tried to explain it to a musical relative, they said that neither method was transposing and didnít know what I was talking about. With hope, someone here will.

1. a. If playing the same notes on another harp key does not change the song key, what is it called?
b. What should one do if they canít find a particular note, go up or down in pitch? Improvise?

2. a. Does playing the Eb pattern on the Bb harp change the song key from Eb to Bb?
b. If not, what is it called and why does it sound okay?

Please take a moment to look this over, any comments and/or direction welcome.

The rows are as follows:

1.a. Playing in a different position.

1.b. If there's a bend available that would satisfy the note, use that. Otherwise, there's not much you can do but play the "wrong" note. Do whatever sounds best.

2.a. Yes.

Thank you Shaggy, I suppose those were pretty basic questions, I just needed to make sure that I understood this correctly. We all learn things in different ways and outlining stuff seems to help me. Thanks again! CR
