"Sonny Terry - Hootin the blues"
 
   Hello,
Here is one of my favourite songs from Sonny http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fuyaf5YBGh8. Can anybody tab the rhythmic patterns during the first 30 seconds? I also have a question about Sonny's style in general is he using tongueblocking (e.g. in the video i posted?) or lip pursing for his rhythms?

Matthias,

Sonny is playing that song in 2nd Position on a key of "A" diatonic. He does not tongue block ever. He is using the Vertical Slot method and putting the harmonica further in his mouth to attain 3 note chords with the draw and blow, but he's mostly emphasizing the draw chords.

   try this:

2 = 2 draw
2+ = 2 blow

123 = draw chord, all 3 notes at the same time
123+=blow chord, all 3 blow notes at the same time

2 123 123 2+ 2 123+ 123+
2 123 123 2+ rest

repeat

Each line above is 4 beats

Get this as a foundation and then try variations

The good times last forever
The bad times fade away
