"tonguing or whistle method"

Dave,
Since I began learning the harmonica I have used the "whistle method" for both the chromatic and the diatonic. However I came across a book "Harmonic Method" R and S Manus which asserts that for the CHROMATIC the tonguing method is ' the best '. Is this just a subjective opinion or is there any real evidence for this assertion?
I am quite happy at the moment with the whistle method on both types of harmonica and don't want to confuse myself even more!
Your thoughts on this would be appreciated,
JohnM

John,

JM: "Is this just a subjective opinion or is there any real evidence for this assertion?"

DG: That is an extremely subjective opinion. Most modern pros use both methods and switch back and forth when desired or necessary. The vast majority of chromatic that I play is with "whistle method" and the same goes for Toots Thielemans and Stevie Wonder, the two most noteworthy chromatic players of the last few decades.

I think you are fine with what you are doing.

Play on,
Dave Gage

Andy,

That wouldn't surprise me. Sonny Terry is a famous diatonic player that never used tongue blocking either.

Play on,
