"Pignose + Green bullet?"

   Hi,

Now that I have a job, I can spend more than $100 on an amp...I was looking at the Pignose G40V tube amp in Musician's Friend ($250), and was wondering if anyone had used this with a Shure Green Bullet.

I really don't know much about either mics or amps, but I'd like to get something of good quality.

I'm kinda going for the Paul Butterfield sound...but I'm not married to it. The Green Bullet with a tube might give me more distortion than I'm looking for, but what do I know.

Thanks for any comments.

First off congrats on the job. The Pig might give you more feedback then youre looking for. I would recommend a small
Fender Tube amp. Blues Junior or the Pro Junior would be a
good amp for you. Do some research and check out
reviews on any and all purchases of equipment. Just remember, like
this post, its just one persons opinion. I would highly recommend
going to a music store and trying, before buying. Someday, someone,
will get wise and make an affordable, amp strictly for Harmonica.
The prices of Harp Amps are enough to scare the dead. Unless youre
playing with a Band, a small tube amp, Silvertone, Magnatone, or the
old Sears Brand tubers cant be beat. Best to ya bluz.....

FYI - I have a pignose 20 and green bullet - I have played thru other amps too (this is my fifth amp owned) In my opinion for a practice amp and for the price this amp is awesome. You do have some control over the distortion. It's very portable - I can carry everything - amp - harp case and mic all at the same time. I bought mine online brand new for under $ 100.00.

I was nervious at first because I could not try one out before buying - I checked music shops and none within 60 miles of my home carried the pignose. I did get to try the fender pro jr. and all other fenders.

But when the pignose arrived and I cranked it up I was simply amazed.

If you find yourself in a situation where you need more volume just mic it thru the PA system.

keep on harpin

Seve

I have a Nifty Fifty and a Masco MAP120 tube amp. Small amps are great for harp. Different mics will sound different with different amps. I use ebay. Good deals on small amps. Go to www. harmony-central.com and see what the owners of different brands of small amps say. Once I settled on the amp, I started buying different mics to try on ebay. If the mic didn't sound good with my amps, I just sold it right back on ebay and bought another to try. That way you don't have a drawer full of mics you can't use. MAKE SURE you buy a mic that has a cord and has been tested and works. Or has a 1/4" female jack or amphenol connection. You can use a Switchcraft mic adapter with the amphenol connecter. Locating a vintage cord for a mic can be almost impossible!!! Electro Voice mics are Dynamic and sound great with harp. EV 605, 630, 638, 641, etc.
Most any mic with a Shure Controlled Reluctance or Controlled Magnetic element will sound good. HI-Z of course. And each Green Bullet CR or CM will sound a little different. Much cheaper to switch mics than amps. And you will end up with 3 or 4 mics you like with a little bit different tone. But before you buy an amp check out harmony-central. It can save you from a big disappointment.
Good Luck,
Slim

I have a pignose 20 with a Green Bullet 520DX or whatever, it is sweet. I am sure that there is a much better setup out there, but I am really enjoying myself. It has a wonderful dirty sound or clean (if you really want that, from Chicago so dirty is in the blood), bottomline, fun setup.
