(This is also in response to your email)

Tongue-switching is just alternately tongue blocking out of one side of your mouth and then switching your tongue over and tongue blocking out of the other side. For instance, I will tongue block hole 4 blow with my tongue on the left side of my mouth and then switch my tongue to the right side and play hole 2 blow. I apply the same concept to draw notes and play holes 4 and 2 draw. Then with some practice, it's fairly easy to do this on a 1st position Major Scale or even a 2nd Position Blues Scale. If you move your tongue rapidly back and forth between any two blow or draw notes, you can do a tongue-switching warble (or trill).

There's more that can be done with tongue-switching, and more that I do with it, but this should help get you started.

Good luck,
Dave Gage

I got the tongue switching thing started. Care to share any of the technique behind turning that into tapping? I hear a lot of the tongue switching on your cds, and it reminds me of how SRV would play a solo and something that sounded like a rhythm guitar part behind it. Being a rather large Eddie Van Halen fan, I would love to learn more about the tapping.

Fugz,

"Care to share any of the technique behind turning that into tapping?"

I guess the real secret to the sound of these techniques is finding a few patterns you like and then playing them very, very fast. The speed hides the technique behind the riffs. A lot of the original ideas for my TS techniques came from note patterns Eddie Van Halen was already doing. Because of the layout of notes on a diatonic and chromatic I couldn't always do the exact same notes he did, but the feeling was the same.

I never really came up with a great system of tab for what I do because it is so "out there" and advanced and frankly not enough demand for it, so it's hard to write precisely what is going on and include the TS sides of the mouth with the notes. Give this one a try though, the first note of the pattern is tongued blocked out of the right side and the second two are from the left side of your mouth:

6B 4D 4B
6B 4D 4B
6B 4D 4B
6B 4D 4B

6D 4D 4B
6D 4D 4B
6D 4D 4B
6D 4D 4B

REPEAT

Play on,
Dave
