Read the following for a quick overview of the "Song Lessons" and "Tabs" sectons. You will note that the style of notation to indicate the notes played is different for the two sections. The MASTER LIST includes a listing of all Song Lessons and Tabs available.
- "Song Lessons" section (with instruction)- Our Song Lessons section supplies melodies and harmonica solos that are used in conjuction with the Lesson Plans section and includes some instruction. These songs are displayed with the common "number and arrow" system of notation. The "up" arrows indicate blow (exhale) notes and the "down" arrows are for the draw (inhale) notes- The little "b's" under the bent arrows are flat signs. One "b" is a half step bend and two "b's" are a whole step bend. The "number and arrow" system is explained in greater detail on the specific song pages.
- "Tabs" (tablature) defined- Tabs (short for tablature) are a simplified way to notate harmonica solos, harmonica parts, melodies and songs, without having to formally read music. In contrast to the songs section, the "Tabs" section uses a "keyboard friendly" style of notation for ease of tab creation by staff and members. "4B" means play a hole 4 blow and "3D" means play a hole 3 draw note. Our tab system is explained in greater detail on the specific tabs pages.
- Tab and Song Books available- Visit our Store's Song & Tab Books page to view a list of Tab books available for numerous harmonica players. Included are: Bob Dylan (harmonica solos and song book both available), Little Walter, Sonny Terry, Charlie Musselwhite, James Cotton, and more.
- Timing for the Tabs is not included- You will note that the timing is not included in the tablature. If you don't know the harmonica part or melody well, you may find it difficult to play. The more famous rock and pop harmonica parts tabs have a link to buy the CD if you don't already own it. If you prefer the complete music for piano with chords and timing included, you can visit our Store for song books, tab books, and "fake" books for many artists and styles.
- Find more tabs in the "Tabs and Songs" Discussion Forum- Our talented and generous members have also added their own tabs and songs to the website. The member-submitted tabs are found in the "Tabs and Songs" Discussion Forum. At last count, there were over 100 submissions already posted at this Forum. Make a request or add one!
You'll certainly want to see what we have in both, but in the meantime, you can start with either the Song Lessons section or the Tabs section.
